How Thrive treats student data when used in a classroom, with schools and families in mind.

Our role as a school service
When Thrive is used in a school setting, we act as a service provider to the school for education records, similar to a "school official" under FERPA — meaning the school directs how student data may be used, and we process it only for the educational purposes the school has authorized. We do not claim any specific third-party certification; instead, this page describes concretely how we handle student data.
Data minimization
We collect only what is needed to run classroom features: a student's name or display name, the classroom they belong to, and their activity within lessons and simulations (progress, scores, and responses to assignments). We do not require or collect unnecessary personal details such as home address or phone number to create a student account.
What teachers can see
Teachers can see the progress, scores, and assignment activity of students enrolled in their own classroom. Teachers cannot see data belonging to students outside their classroom, and students cannot see other students' individual results unless a teacher enables a shared, teacher-controlled feature such as a leaderboard.
No ads to students
Student and classroom pages, including dashboards, simulations, and the AI coach, never display advertising and never load ad network scripts. Advertising, where it appears at all, is limited strictly to Thrive's public marketing and article pages that require no sign-in. See our Privacy Policy for more detail.
No sale of student data
We do not sell student personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers. Student data is not used to build advertising profiles.
No AI training on student data
We do not use student data — including responses submitted to the AI coach or classroom assignments — to train third-party AI models. Student interactions with the AI coach are used only to provide that student's own tutoring experience.
Retention and deletion
We retain student data for as long as the school's use of Thrive is active. Schools, teachers, or parents/guardians can request export or deletion of student data at any time via Account Deletion or by emailing privacy@thrivemoney.org. We delete or anonymize the data within a reasonable period after a verified request, except where limited records must be retained for legal or security reasons.
COPPA
For students under 13, Thrive relies on the school's consent on behalf of parents, consistent with COPPA's model for schools authorizing educational technology, and we collect only the data necessary for that educational use.
FERPA and school control
Schools retain ownership and control of their students' education records. We process those records under the school's direction and do not use them for purposes outside the educational services the school has requested.
Parent and guardian rights
Parents and legal guardians may contact their child's school or Thrive directly to review, correct, or request deletion of their child's information. Email privacy@thrivemoney.org and we will work with the school to verify and fulfill the request.
Security
Student data is protected using encrypted connections, role-based access controls limiting who can view classroom data, and secure authentication. Access to student records is limited to the teacher of that classroom and authorized Thrive personnel supporting the platform.
